The Greene County boys soccer team, in its inaugural season, won its first postseason game 11-2 over Unity Christian (Orange City) in the quarterfinals of Class 1A Substate 1. The game was played in Denison.
The win clinched a winning season for coach Carl Behne’s team, bringing its season record to 10-8.
The Rams scored 5:26 seconds into the game and led 4-1 at intermission. They scored five times in the first 16 minutes of the second half. Junior Gutierrez scored four goals, Leo Marques scored three goals, Cael Fisher scored two and Luis Velazco scored one goal. Marques is the Number Two top scorer in Iowa high school boys soccer with 35 goals on the season. Gutierrez is in the top 20 with 18 goals.
Austin Delp, Luis Tuesta and Marques were each credited with an assist.
The Rams play in a substate semifinal Wednesday at 5 pm in Denison. They’ll face Kuemper (Carroll). The Rams played the Kuemper Knights on April 20 and lost 1-0. The Knights are 12-7 on the season.
